The history of Roulette

The exact history of Roulette is unknown although there are many different theories about its origins. The most popular theory about the history of roulette is that a mathematician called Blaise Pascal created the game in France during the 17th century. Although some believe that an earlier version of a roulette type game originated in China, and the game was brought to Europe through the spice trade routes. Another more elaborate theory is that a man called Francois Blanc sold his soul to devil for the secret of roulette, Francois Blanc founded the first ever casinos in Monte Carlo. They say roulette is the devil’s invention because if you add all of the numbers up on a roulette wheel they total 666, a number commonly associated with the devil.

The word Roulette is a French term meaning 'small or little wheel'. Originally the roulette wheel was numbered 1 to 36 but In 1842, two Frenchmen, François and Louis Blanc added the "0" to the roulette wheel in order to increase odds. When the game was brought to the United States in the 1800’s a double zero was added, the double zero was added to make an even 38 numbers on the wheel. The American Roulette wheel displays the numbers 1 to 36 plus both single and double zero slots, while in Europe we only have a single zero section on their roulette wheel. So there is in fact two versions of the game.

Once casinos were introduced to the Internet sometime in the mid 1990's and since then the game of roulette has quickly became popular as a form of online entertainment. Today roulette continues to grow and is still one of the most popular casino games around. This is due to the fact that roulette is not only great fun and very exciting; it is also a very easy game to play.
